The island of Mykonos Greece

February 10th, 2010

While Mykonos is a barren island due to the infrequency of rainfall, there is something enchanting about it. History says that this is where Hercules slew the Giants, and that all the island’s large rocks are actually their petrified bodies.

Mykonos town itself is of unique cycladic architecture, built around a pretty fishing village bay.  Whitewashed buildings are stuck together in a tangle of narrow alleyways and streets.  There are many good places to eat in Mykonos are there are also lots of high end and chic shops to browse.

Nightlife in Mykonos is renowned. Greeks and foreigners organize special events and parties, which go well into the night and early morning and are often mentioned in the magazine columns.

The beaches on Mykonos are gorgeous. Agios Sostis Beach is in a beautiful position with fine sand and clear water, and not many tourists.  Kiki’s is a picturesque, authentic, off the beach terrace restaurant that is a great experience for lunch.  The most popular beaches are Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Eila.

The temperature on Mykonos is lovely.  The extreme summer heat is usually kept under control by the wind, called the Meltemi making for a wonderful balmy feeling.

The island is dotted with the famous windmills, dating from the 16th century. There are good museums to visit, and of course the island of Delos a short boat trip away.

Some believe Mykonos is charmed due to its nearness to this small island of Delos, which has one of the most extensive ruin sites in the world, dating from 200 BC.  Upon arrival by local boat, the remains of temples, homes and monuments will enthrall you.  According to legend, it was the birthplace of the twins, Apollo and Artemis.

One of the best ways to enjoy the island is to stay in a rental villa.  With fantastic sea views, a pool and wonderful outdoor eating and sitting areas a rental villa on Mykonos is the perfect place to unwind after a day of swimming in the sea, sunbathing, sightseeing and shopping.
