A Brief Guide to Liguria

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

The Liguria region of Italy divides itself neatly into two parts with Genoa as the center point.  To the east stretching into France are the sandy beaches of the Riviera di Ponente or the Italian Riviera and to the west are the steep rocky breathtaking slopes of the Riviera di Levante.
San Remo is the last major Italian city before the French boarder.  It rose in prominence in the late 19th century when aristocrats and the wealthy were, as now, patrons of the casino
Cervo is considered one of the prettiest of the holiday beach resort of the Ligurian coastline.  Even though it is a characteristic resort town the village none the less has an overall unassuming charm of an old fishing village
Genoa is the capital of the Liguria region and during the 16th century rivaled Venice as a commercial center.  Today it is Italy’s most important commercial port. For this reason the city is one of contrast with its rich historical past and the busy modern port it is today, The city is reputed to be the birthplace of Christopher Columbus and there are statues and public buildings and a museum dedicated to him throughout the city.  The city also contains Europe’s largest aquarium.
Portofino is the most exclusive harbor and resort town in Italy.  The town can be reached by car or boat, but the town itself is closed to car traffic.  There are many hiking trails in the area connecting many of the historical sights and spectacular views such as the Abbazia di San Fruttuoso.  A medieval Benedictine Monastery located in the fishing village of San Fruttuoso on the Portofino Peninsula, which can only be reached by an approximate 2 hour hike from Portifino or via ferry boat.
Cinque Terre literally means “the five lands” and refers to 5 villages dramatically situated on rocky terraces and bays.  Three of the towns have no road access and are joined only by rail, boat or by an ancient footpath, named the Sentiero Azzurro, which cuts through vineyard and olive grove terraces, following the coastline, offering an experience of rare beauty.
