The Trevi Fountain, Rome

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

The Trevi Fountain, or the Fontana di Trevi in Italian, is a fountain in the city of Rome, Italy. It was designed by Nicola Salvi in 1732 and completed in 1792.   Standing 25.9 meters (85 feet) high and 19.8 meters (65 feet) wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and is located in the Piazza di Trevi.

The location of the fountain originally marked the termination point of the Aqua Virgo, an aqueduct that supplied water to ancient Rome in 19BC.
The Roman’s had a custom of building a handsome fountain at the endpoint of any aqueduct.  This practice was revived starting in the 15th century, with the birth of the Renaissance so with the repair of the Aqua Virgo when once again fresh water was supplied to Rome a fountain was commissioned.

The current fountain’s theme is, The Taming of the Waters.
The central figures are Neptune flanked by two Tritons, the one on the left is trying to calm an unruly seahorse, the other is leading a docile seahorse, symbolizing the two contrasting moods of the sea. Water tumbles and flows around these figures, mixing water and rockwork, and fills a small pool at the base.

In the niches flanking Neptune there is, on the left, Abundance who spills water from her urn and on the right is Salubrity who holds a cup from which a snake drinks. Above, both of these figures are two bas reliefs which illustrate the Roman origin of the first century BC aqueduct.

The fountain was refurbished in 1998 when the stonework was scrubbed and the fountain was provided with re-circulating pumps.

The traditional custom holds that if a visitor throws a coin into the fountain, over your shoulder while facing away, you are ensured a return to Rome, if you throw second coin you are able to make a wish.
Approximately 3,000 euros are thrown into the fountain each day, which are collected and used for Rome’s charitable projects.
